Expert positioning. If I could do it, imagine what YOU can do.

I just contributed my expert opinion to an article that Brumilda van Rensburg was also asked to contribute to. THE Brumilda van Rensburg.  This sounds to me like the stuff that dreams are made of; the only difference though is that it is true. Pity that I do not get to meet this icon. :-)

It is in moments like these that I can't help but look back and see the distance that I created between now and my background.  It is challenging though, because I am so used to working hard, setting goals and going after them.

Coming from a community where those who dared to dream were often told that they "think that they are better..."  So, dreaming of something different, meant that you risk rejection.  It took me a while to break free from this limitation, to realise that it could actually be beneficial to my community if I would accomplish my dreams and be in a position to go back and plough back.

The art of expert positioning
When you do it right, you can ensure that you not only score your own column (thank you Kuier magazine), or regular slot on radio (thank you RSG), but that you are in the minds of journalists, editors, producers and presenters when they are looking for an expert opinion.

Well, I have already submitted my next fabulous big dream to God and the universe.  And it is a privilege to dream dreams that include other people, their growth and reaching their full potention.

Watch this space for information on my upcoming public seminar on Expert Positioning, titled: Grow Your Personal Brand Or Business By Getting Great Publicity.

You can do it!!!
If I could do it and get to where I am with every little odd there is, appearing to be against me, imagine what you can do.

Have a beautiful Tuesday.

Empathy in the work place - people with disabilities

Avoid making costly mistakes when planning to write your book

Do you want to write a book?

It is no secret that publishing a book, is one of the best ways in which you can position yourself as an expert in your field.  And when you do it right, it can lead to wonderful speaking opportunities, magazine and / or newspaper articles and to opportunities where you can contribute your expert opinion.

Many young or inexperienced authors who fail to plan their journey, often see their dream being crushed, because they were over-eager and neglected to ask for feedback.  By planning appropriately and by asking for feedback, you can avoid costly mistakes.

Because of my programme on Expert Positioning titled: Grow Your Personal Brand or Business By Getting Great Publicity, I receive regular enquiries from aspirant-authors.  Some have a great idea of what they want to do, while the majority are not quite sure.

This reminds me of someone who called me and asked for my assistance with putting together her book.  This individual was very excited, because writing a book, was one of their biggest dreams.  They are in their fifties and wanted to write a non-fiction book about their childhood pet that died, due to an illness.  They asked me for my opinion.  I said that I didn't think that that was a good idea, and that it could have worked, had they and / or the dog been in the public eye - if the dog was perhaps a somewhat of a Lassie-character.

I asked them who they think would buy their book.  They said that they would like to sell it at pet shops and that they were hoping that a national publishing house would publish their book.  It was clear that they didn't intend writing for an audience, even thought they wanted an audience to buy their book.  As a result I suggested that they create a photo book and keep their beloved pet's memory alive in that way.

Needless to say, they were not very happy with my answer.  I'm all for positive thinking and goal-setting, but we also have to be realistic.

I look back on my journey, and wish people would have given me honest feedback years ago.  I cannot imagine where I would have been right now.  However, judging by how some people respond to criticism that could make them grow, I can understand why most people are not very keen to give honest and sometimes negative feedback, even when asked.

I do what I do, because I absolutely love it and because I have made mistakes and learnt hard lessons, but more importantly because when I work with you or guide you I want to help you so that you will avoid unnecessary mistakes.  So, if want sugar-coated feedback, go somewhere else.  If you want feedback that will make you grow, then you are welcome to ask me.

The cherry one the cake, is that I share some of the mistakes that I have made, so that you can have a good laugh at me.  That way, you also feel that I am not pointing out something, just because I want to pick on you.

The very important planning stage when you consider writing a book
We've all heard the saying: “Everybody has a story”, or “everybody has a book inside of them.” This is true, but you have to plan on how exactly you are going to get that book out of your system, turning it into a reality.

“If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.”
There is a very good reason why publishers ask for a synopsis in which you have to give an outline of what your book is about, who you are writing for and more importantly, who will buy your book.

When you take time to focus of these questions, you get a very good idea of what to write about and what you should focus on.

You have to step outside of yourself and get into the mind of your audience, the reader of your book. If you hope to sell your book, you should focus on your audience.

Focus on who your audience is and decide on what would be best suited for them. Some people have the luxury of fame and as a result can write about anything, without necessarily considering the reader and would still sell tons of books. Those of us who do not have this, should make sure that we plan before embarking on finalising our books.

Ask for feedback
It is extremely important to ask for feedback, especially when you are still young and / or do not have prior experience in writing or publishing a book. Even though support from family or friends is a wonderful thing, you have to remember that they might not always be as objective as you need them to be.
Sometimes family and friends would give wonderful feedback, because they love you. This feedback may not necessarily serve you in the business arena. Find a mentor if you have to, someone who knows, someone with experience whose objective it is, to help you grow and help you produce the best book possible. If your friends or family have sufficient experience, then yes, you can ask them for feedback.

If you rush it, you might crush it”
If you want to publish your own book, don't be in too much of a hurry to see your book in print. After completing your manuscript, take time to re-read it. See whether there are parts that you should rather leave out or parts that you have left out that should be included in the book.

Success it's your choice, self-published in 2003.  In 2006 it was approved for the school curriculum (Life Orientation) by the Department of Education, in the majority of the provinces.  R99.00 + R25, 00 postage.

It is also available in Afrikaans, titled: Sukses, jou keuse.

When you are done with re-reading your manuscript and are happy, give it to someone else to read, someone with knowledge and experience. Ask them to make suggestions. You may not necessarily agree with all of their suggestions, but you are sure to have a few enlightening experiences. You may realise that something that you thought was a great idea, is actually a very bad idea – something that you can rectify before your book goes to print.

You don't want to be in a situation where your book is not received well, because you neglected to plan, failed to ask for feedback and were in too much of a hurry to publish your book. When self-publishing, don't be one of those new or inexperienced authors who have to rectify spelling errors or change a few things in their book after it is published, because they didn't have a qualified editor or failed to focus on who their audience would be.

My book on empathy, titled: In Mekaar Se Skoene, published by Naledi.  Currently only available in Afrikaans.  R159, 00 + R25, 00 postage.

If you want a national publishing house to publish your book, you should take the same care with completing your manuscript. Please note that a very small percentage of manuscripts that are submitted to publishing houses, are approved for publishing. You'll have to work hard, plan and commit to the writing process to ensure that your manuscript is one of those that makes the grade.

Best wishes on your journey. If you do it right, great things are possible.

A little history behind The Wellness & Networking Event For Women

As I am getting everything in place for my upcoming event: The Wellness & Networking Event For Women, I cannot help, but think of my journey and of where the idea to host this event comes from.

Yes, there are many events out there, the one more spectacular than the other.  But when I got the idea for this event, I asked myself: "How do I make this event one that will speak to the heart of women, of all women, irrespective of race, culture, religion - especially since I do not have the fame-factor that tends to more easily draw people?

I thought of what was important to me, about what I would like to hear when I attend an event.  And I decided to bring a number of experts together, to ensure that my event is able to touch everyone present.  At the end of my event, I want delegates to be able to list a few things that they know more about or understand a little better BECAUSE they attended The Wellness & Networking Event For Women.

My beautiful invitation

Do send me an email if you would like to receive the invitation via email.

My sponsor

This year I am honoured to have Old Mutual on board as sponsor and Ms. Sylvia Walker, Market Development Managerwho will share some of  her knowledge and expertise around financial matters.

When I look at the invitation and at all our contributors, I am proud to say that my delegates will be in great company.

My passion for health and well-being
I believe in balance.  As women we may not always get this perfectly right, but trying, is good enough to start with.

I often look back and think about my mother, because this is something that she never experienced.  All the sacrifices that she's made for her children when she was left to raise seven children by herself, after my father left and failed to support us.

Well, I don't know how she did it.  And even though I am grateful that she was my mother, even though I am grateful that she has made all the sacrifices, I wish that she would have done a little more for herself.  But it is too late now.  On 28 March this year, she was gone (had passed on) for 19 years.

You are fabulous, special and worthy With this event, I would like to say to every woman out there, who is still not quite featuring on her list of priorities, that you have to find time to focus on yourself.
This is the reason why I always sponsor the mid-week break

One lucky lady will walk away with this prize - a week (Monday - Friday) at Mabalingwe Nature Reserve in Bella Bella.

Some feedback from the lady who enjoyed the mid-week break after a previous event.  Her colleague was the actual winner, but gave her the prize.  For privacy reasons, I have altered her email address a little.

The holiday was awesome.
The accommodation was really beautiful.

I got some time to relax and refresh, which I really needed.

I received great service from the staff there as well.

All went 100% smoothly.

Thank you

.........................................................

Why do we have an expert at the event, doing blood pressure checks?
I have always been a very healthy person and was blessed with genes that ensured that I never struggled with weight issues.

Yet, at age 33, I was diagnosed with high blood pressure.  I was embarrassed about it and remained "in the closet" about this diagnosis for a long time.

Most women are still struggling with assertiveness.  How often do people step on our toes and we keep quiet, because we do not want to come across as rude?

We tend to turn the other cheek, take a deep breath and often suffer in silence. The worst part is that every little issue that is not dealt with, makes a dent in our overall emotional well-being.  And when we deal with enough issues in this way, there is a good chance that we will end up with some disease.

Women are often the last to feature on their list of priorities, if at all.  This is also true for health matters. Most women tend to put off those important medical check-ups.  Well, it IS better to know.  It is important that we know our numbers, i.e. blood-pressure, cholesterol and so forth.

I am proud to say that because of The Wellness & Networking Event For Women, we have saved, or at least prolonged quite a few lives over the years.  A number of women, have been diagnosed with sky-high blood pressure, while they had no idea of their condition.  We need to look after ourselves a little better.

Your number is private
We respect your privacy, therefore you have to volunteer to have your blood-pressure taken.  Rest assured - the medical expert won't blurt out your measurement in front of everyone.

The danger of an inability to let go
Apart from doing everything right, I was diagnosed with this disease because I did not realise the impact that my inability to let go of crippling emotional pain and prolonged anger, had on my health.

With the diagnosis and the inability to let go, came severe chronic shoulder pain - every day.  My dear husband had to give countless neck and shoulder massages.  I am grateful for his wonderful support.

The switch to that chemical imbalance (high blood pressure diagnosis)
Looking back, I remember the details about that switch, from being free from high blood pressure to being counted as a sufferer.  I remember what I was thinking, I remember feeling angry. I remember being aware of how my blood pressure increased. I remember the sensation on the top of my head, the sensation of my tongue.  I remember focusing and trying to pull myself away, changing my state and focusing on breathing.

I managed to do this, but I could not prevent that switch...

Today, I can't help but wonder whether I was heading for a stroke, if I did not manage to pull myself away in time.

This is one of the things that I discussed with one of my Psychology professors a few years ago, when I had him review my programme on emotional intelligence: The Art Of Letting Go.  A programme that I developed after my miraculous healing.

Possible future research
I am very interested in finding out (research) what exactly happens with stroke victims, just before their stroke.  Perhaps I could do this research as part of my doctorate studies.
I am interested in finding out more about the sensations that stroke victims experience just before getting a stroke, when the stroke is as a result of holding onto bad anger.

It would also be wonderful to perhaps have an expert determine that I was indeed preventing a stroke that day.  And if it is, perhaps what I have done, could be taught to possible stroke victims - struggling with anger issues.

See, I am very passionate about Psychology and about learning exactly how the mind works and more.

This experience was a profound journey and a wonderful lesson in emotional intelligence.

I shared a little about my experience (in Rooi Rose, May 2012) and about the powerful vision that I had that finally made me realise that I was going to die prematurely, if I didn't let go.

Long story short...

I eventually managed to tackle the "demons."  I worked through the issues, and managed to let go and forgive.  When I felt that I was eventually free from the pain, I noticed that the chronic pain in my shoulder had disappeared.

Let's appreciate the one body that we have and let's look after it to the best of our ability.

Today, I am looking forward to becoming a Psychologist and to contribute.

I look after my health, do regular exercise and always take time to breathe.

Even though it is not recommended, I have (for personal reasons) decided to chuck the chronic medication out the window.

PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS!!!

My advise is that you speak to your medical practitioner and be closely monitored by them and only take such action, under their guidance and with their approval.

.......................................

Thank you. I am looking forward to hosting you.

And remember to look after yourself, your health and well-being.

Andeline.

Featuring Shareefa's business on my blog, is just my way of saying to her that I appreciate that she shared my wall posts with her contacts and that I would like to do the same for her.  And if more people become aware of her business, that would be enough. But thank you for going one step further, in making contact and make use of their services.  They guarantee service excellence.

A WORD FROM SHAREEFA

"My love affair for travel in Africa began in 1965. My Dad was an explorer. He travelled through the most remote places and jungles on his intrepid journeys through Mozambique and surrounding  northern countries.
From childhood, I  have appreciated different cultures, an attitude encouraged by my father, who spoke as he was inspired through our travels to foreign lands.
I fell irretrievably in love with the people, culture and landscapes along my journeys of new discoveries.
During the remote explorations I was bitten by bugs, mosquito’s, seen indigenous snakes, danger encounters with crocodiles, hippos and sharks… believe it or not but I was continuously humbled by the generosity of the local tribes as they took us into their shelters.
I was locked in a long relationship with this mother continent ever since. I am blessed by the best camera in the world which was one’s eyes. The most beautiful photos were my memories.
Over the last decade after earning enough of Bush and Taxi Miles figuring where to go next, a love affair was born."

Most hairdressers will trim bangs for free, but if you don’t have time for a trip to the hair salon, Creaclip can be the solution for you."
