When falsely accused, make a public statement - Open Letter to Professional Speaker: Douglas Kruger

Today, I am spring cleaning my heart and mind. I had many venting sessions about your verbal attack on me, about your false accusations that I have plagiarized your work. However, because (even when I am angry), I am still driven by Empathy and as a result, I have never mentioned your name. This is so strange, especially since you had no problem attacking me on your public Facebook wall (in front of the world), accusing me of plagiarism and questioning my sense of humour and my ability to enjoy being sexual. Well, Douglas, the words: "EXPERT POSITIONING" do not belong to you. I am against plagiarism, have always been and I am also speaking up against it, because I know what it feels like when people steal your work, without giving the due acknowledgement. And for someone to actually plagiarize your work, they would have to have access to it, don't you think?

Three of your colleagues have attended my public seminar on Expert Positioning. I am known for my comprehensive notes that I generously share with my clients. Contact me for their names - perhaps they could show you my notes. In my letter to you in which I request that you give me proof for your false accusation, you failed to respond and you failed to give me proof.

Apparently, you eventually deleted all those comments. It is just a pity that they were not deleted from the minds of those who had witnessed, who believed - just because you said it. It is a pity that deleting them from your wall did not delete it from the minds of those who are talking, whispering. It is a pity that it was not deleted from my heart, mind and computer.

WISDOM BY JT FOXX
I was about to spend money on taking legal action until I read the blog of JT Foxx in which he says that when there are false accusations about you, you should make a public statement. This is my public statement.

As usual, I was ready to let go of this matter, to allow it to disappear into thin air, until I heard the whispers. We live in the age of Google and Gossip and people often make decisions based on what they hear - whether it is true or not. And so today I stand up for myself, my business, for my journey of hard work in which I didn't cut corners and for everybody who remains voiceless.

LOOKING INWARD
Throughout your verbal attack on me, in which your wife and a few of your Facebook friends joined you, I thought to myself that I had no idea that my reference to your regular inappropriate and sexually suggestive comments on your public wall, could set off such a war. I got the impression that nobody messes with Douglas Kruger and those who dare are setting themselves up for trouble. All you had to do was to look inward and evaluate my comment.

I have seen these comments on your wall, from the cheap sexual mockery that you made about the name of a religious publishing house, to the last comment about your wife watching the wife of some Hollywood actor... I will not even repeat that comment here, because it is just in absolute bad taste and it is unprofessional for someone of your stature to say such things and the many other things that you wrote on your wall, while you are telling me and others about professional conduct. And that was my point. With all these comments that I have witnessed over a few months, I was surprised that nobody in your inner circle told you that you should stop, that it was inappropriate. I remember all the "likes" that you received. No wonder you thought that your comments were witty and humorous. Well, maybe when you are a comedian, but certainly not when you are a professional speaker and get onto a podium to tell others how to conduct themselves.

I will save the details about all these comments that I noted as inappropriate for court. I'm sure that you'll attempt to sue me for speaking up and speaking the truth - yet, it was quite okay for you to defame me and to verbally attack me.
As your wife reminded me in one of her attacking comments on Facebook about the fact that she has a law degree... I do not understand how anyone would want to sue someone only because they do not agree with them.  Unlike you, your wife and some of your friends, I have stated the facts and didn't resort to insults.

And the "friendly warning" via email by your colleague that you could sue me... Not sure whether he thought that he was dealing with some stupid person.
I could not believe his comment, more so, because NO email from him in which he warns you about the fact that I could take legal action against you had arrived in my inbox. I wonder why... I wonder how this person would have responded if it was his wife or daughter who had been attacked and defamed in this way, an attack that he had witnessed. Would he say to them to not talk about it, would he warn them about legal action when they were the victim of something like this?

I wondered even more about whether he thought that he was dealing with some stupid person when I received his newsletter. I do not have time to pull it apart point by point. In the email he also said that he doesn't want to be involved and I respected that. When I received the newsletter and read it, I got the impression that he went back on his decision about not wanting to be involved, because to me it seemed as if he was protecting you.

He refers to some comedian using profanities and how that didn't take away from the quality of his craft, etc. My response: Yes, that person is a comedian and that is what most comedians do – they use profanities, etc. etc. I do not recall any of them telling me how to conduct myself in a professional manner though. He also refers to John Maxwell speaking and during his talk asking his audience to excuse him, because he just wants to write something down that he doesn't want to forget later. He mentions that that doesn't make him see John Maxwell as unprofessional, etc. Damn right it doesn't I would tell John Maxwell that he could take 5 minutes (if he asks for a minute) to write down something, before he continues with his speech. John Maxwell didn't use profanities, so there is a difference – a BIG difference.

After you tried to justify your inappropriate comments with your reference to what Gordon Ramsey, Jeremy Clarkson, etc. does, I sat in front of my computer in shock, wondering: “Who is this person?” Yes, Gordon swears when he cooks and Jeremy is not exactly an angel, but the difference between you and them, is that you tell me and others how to conduct ourselves, and they don’t. That’s the difference.

THE CONVERSATION BECAME UGLY
I left the conversation in the afternoon, because it became too much for me, I am not used to mud- slinging. But you couldn't resist coming back later that evening, accusing me of plagiarism. That sounds like harassment.

You said that I was unprofessional, because I wear a bikini - your reference, and I quote: "skimpy bikini." Why am I not surprised?  We live in a society that is often quick to turn a woman (who stands up for herself) into something to be objectified.  This comment of yours made me feel like I wanted to go and scrub myself. Different rules for men and women - our wonderful society.  How nice?  I believe that you appear shirtless on your Facebook wall these days.
Douglas Kruger, I will wear a bikini for as long as I look good in a bikini. I can promise you though that I will NEVER go to work in a bikini, because since I am not a bikini model, that would really be unprofessional and I will have a few names attached to mine.

However, you took your pornographic jokes to work. Remember the talk that you gave at one function at which I was an audience member. You can do that, and still enjoy wonderful support and still you are seen and treated as a professional. Yes, "some people are more equal than others."

Your wife also insisted that you are a decent man and as I said, I believe her, because I do not know you. However, what I do know is that sometimes respect for others are reserved to a particular race, to a particular culture, to fellow group members, etc. And as a mother of a young boy, I know that if my son ever talks to a woman in the manner in which you have talked to me (whether it is someone from a different race, whether it is the prostitute on the street corner, whether it is the domestic worker, whether it is the woman who begs at the robot with her child on her arm) while he calls himself decent, he’ll have to answer to me, because I won’t be happy.

By all means, be as sexual as you want to be, but surely as a professional, those comments do not belong on a public Facebook wall. But then again, you basically announced to the world in one of your follow-up wall posts, that you will do as you please and I quote:

“Friends, I have just been PC smacked. I am not responsible for the image that you have of me. I will not tone down my wit and humor...”

And as I wrote in my letter to you in which two of your colleagues were copied, you are wrong, because you HAVE sold me the professional image that I HAD of you, through your book.

Writing that letter and the email to you after your colleague suggested that we meet to talk about this whole matter, was my way of reaching out to you. You failed to respond, you failed to make an attempt to apologize and in doing that, you have cemented the unpleasant, arrogant and egotistical impression that I now have of you.

Four keys to being a regular guest on radio, for a year and longer

Opportunity comes to those who...create them.

On 25 January 2013 I've been blessed to share my message of empathy on radio, for exactly one year.  This wonderful opportunity came about, as a result of my book on empathy, titled:In Mekaar Se Skoene.

From the very beginning, I said to myself that I will treat the opportunity as if it is a paying job.  And I'm glad I did, because it has opened another avenue, that I have to remain tight-lipped about for a little while longer.  Even though I didn't get paid in monetary terms, the positive feedback received and the fact that I am still on air, are priceless rewards.

Like Richard Branson says: “Do good, have fun and the money will come.”

I look back at my journey; a journey that was one of growth and contribution.

BUT...

  • What did I do?
  • How did I do it?
  • And what could I share with you, should you be interested in sharing your knowledge on a particular media platform.

1.  Commitment:
It is extremely important to make the commitment, once you have made up your mind about following a particular journey.

2.  Be available and be ready
My empathy contribution is done via telephone.
Can you imagine how my hosts would feel if they were to call one day, and I do not answer my telephone? That would create an inconvenience, leave them feeling irritated, but it would also mean that I am unreliable.

I make sure that I am available, that I am close to my telephone when it rings, and more importantly, that I am ready to share my contribution.  My wonderful hosts do not have to call me ten minutes before the time, to tell me that they will call me within the next ten minutes.
They know that I will be on the other side and that I will be ready.

This builds trust – something that is extremely important in business.

3.  Preparation
It is important to prepare, irrespective of how well you think you know your topic.  This shows respect for yourself and your work, for your host(s), but most importantly, for your audience.

4.  It's not about you, but about the listeners
To be a regular guest / regular expert on radio, it is important to remember that it should not be about you, but about the listener.

Ask yourself the following questions:
  • How will my message benefit the listener, (my audience)?
  • How will their lives be enriched by being exposed to my message?
  • What could I teach them?
  • What could I remind them of? or
  • How could I make them think?

It is also important to NOT offend the listener.   Do not underestimate their intelligence.  If you have to communicate a difference of opinion, you can do so in a respectful and empathic manner.

Remember the above points and positive rewards would be inevitable.  Apart from wonderful feedback, you will gain the respect of your audience and might gain a few more clients.

All these came my way, as well as the wonderful bonus that I need to remain tight-lipped about for a little while longer.

Food For Thought
When your foundation is empathy, service, and to positively contribute, it might take a little while longer to reach your destination, but believe me: you will get there and you will get there good.

Best wishes with your journey of building your personal brand or business by getting great publicity. Should you require my services in this regard, contact me to request a quote.

Expert positioning. If I could do it, imagine what YOU can do.

I just contributed my expert opinion to an article that Brumilda van Rensburg was also asked to contribute to. THE Brumilda van Rensburg.  This sounds to me like the stuff that dreams are made of; the only difference though is that it is true. Pity that I do not get to meet this icon. :-)

It is in moments like these that I can't help but look back and see the distance that I created between now and my background.  It is challenging though, because I am so used to working hard, setting goals and going after them.

Coming from a community where those who dared to dream were often told that they "think that they are better..."  So, dreaming of something different, meant that you risk rejection.  It took me a while to break free from this limitation, to realise that it could actually be beneficial to my community if I would accomplish my dreams and be in a position to go back and plough back.

The art of expert positioning
When you do it right, you can ensure that you not only score your own column (thank you Kuier magazine), or regular slot on radio (thank you RSG), but that you are in the minds of journalists, editors, producers and presenters when they are looking for an expert opinion.

Well, I have already submitted my next fabulous big dream to God and the universe.  And it is a privilege to dream dreams that include other people, their growth and reaching their full potention.

Watch this space for information on my upcoming public seminar on Expert Positioning, titled: Grow Your Personal Brand Or Business By Getting Great Publicity.

You can do it!!!
If I could do it and get to where I am with every little odd there is, appearing to be against me, imagine what you can do.

Have a beautiful Tuesday.

Avoid making costly mistakes when planning to write your book

Do you want to write a book?

It is no secret that publishing a book, is one of the best ways in which you can position yourself as an expert in your field.  And when you do it right, it can lead to wonderful speaking opportunities, magazine and / or newspaper articles and to opportunities where you can contribute your expert opinion.

Many young or inexperienced authors who fail to plan their journey, often see their dream being crushed, because they were over-eager and neglected to ask for feedback.  By planning appropriately and by asking for feedback, you can avoid costly mistakes.

Because of my programme on Expert Positioning titled: Grow Your Personal Brand or Business By Getting Great Publicity, I receive regular enquiries from aspirant-authors.  Some have a great idea of what they want to do, while the majority are not quite sure.

This reminds me of someone who called me and asked for my assistance with putting together her book.  This individual was very excited, because writing a book, was one of their biggest dreams.  They are in their fifties and wanted to write a non-fiction book about their childhood pet that died, due to an illness.  They asked me for my opinion.  I said that I didn't think that that was a good idea, and that it could have worked, had they and / or the dog been in the public eye - if the dog was perhaps a somewhat of a Lassie-character.

I asked them who they think would buy their book.  They said that they would like to sell it at pet shops and that they were hoping that a national publishing house would publish their book.  It was clear that they didn't intend writing for an audience, even thought they wanted an audience to buy their book.  As a result I suggested that they create a photo book and keep their beloved pet's memory alive in that way.

Needless to say, they were not very happy with my answer.  I'm all for positive thinking and goal-setting, but we also have to be realistic.

I look back on my journey, and wish people would have given me honest feedback years ago.  I cannot imagine where I would have been right now.  However, judging by how some people respond to criticism that could make them grow, I can understand why most people are not very keen to give honest and sometimes negative feedback, even when asked.

I do what I do, because I absolutely love it and because I have made mistakes and learnt hard lessons, but more importantly because when I work with you or guide you I want to help you so that you will avoid unnecessary mistakes.  So, if want sugar-coated feedback, go somewhere else.  If you want feedback that will make you grow, then you are welcome to ask me.

The cherry one the cake, is that I share some of the mistakes that I have made, so that you can have a good laugh at me.  That way, you also feel that I am not pointing out something, just because I want to pick on you.

The very important planning stage when you consider writing a book
We've all heard the saying: “Everybody has a story”, or “everybody has a book inside of them.” This is true, but you have to plan on how exactly you are going to get that book out of your system, turning it into a reality.

“If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.”
There is a very good reason why publishers ask for a synopsis in which you have to give an outline of what your book is about, who you are writing for and more importantly, who will buy your book.

When you take time to focus of these questions, you get a very good idea of what to write about and what you should focus on.

You have to step outside of yourself and get into the mind of your audience, the reader of your book. If you hope to sell your book, you should focus on your audience.

Focus on who your audience is and decide on what would be best suited for them. Some people have the luxury of fame and as a result can write about anything, without necessarily considering the reader and would still sell tons of books. Those of us who do not have this, should make sure that we plan before embarking on finalising our books.

Ask for feedback
It is extremely important to ask for feedback, especially when you are still young and / or do not have prior experience in writing or publishing a book. Even though support from family or friends is a wonderful thing, you have to remember that they might not always be as objective as you need them to be.
Sometimes family and friends would give wonderful feedback, because they love you. This feedback may not necessarily serve you in the business arena. Find a mentor if you have to, someone who knows, someone with experience whose objective it is, to help you grow and help you produce the best book possible. If your friends or family have sufficient experience, then yes, you can ask them for feedback.

If you rush it, you might crush it”
If you want to publish your own book, don't be in too much of a hurry to see your book in print. After completing your manuscript, take time to re-read it. See whether there are parts that you should rather leave out or parts that you have left out that should be included in the book.

Success it's your choice, self-published in 2003.  In 2006 it was approved for the school curriculum (Life Orientation) by the Department of Education, in the majority of the provinces.  R99.00 + R25, 00 postage.

It is also available in Afrikaans, titled: Sukses, jou keuse.

When you are done with re-reading your manuscript and are happy, give it to someone else to read, someone with knowledge and experience. Ask them to make suggestions. You may not necessarily agree with all of their suggestions, but you are sure to have a few enlightening experiences. You may realise that something that you thought was a great idea, is actually a very bad idea – something that you can rectify before your book goes to print.

You don't want to be in a situation where your book is not received well, because you neglected to plan, failed to ask for feedback and were in too much of a hurry to publish your book. When self-publishing, don't be one of those new or inexperienced authors who have to rectify spelling errors or change a few things in their book after it is published, because they didn't have a qualified editor or failed to focus on who their audience would be.

My book on empathy, titled: In Mekaar Se Skoene, published by Naledi.  Currently only available in Afrikaans.  R159, 00 + R25, 00 postage.

If you want a national publishing house to publish your book, you should take the same care with completing your manuscript. Please note that a very small percentage of manuscripts that are submitted to publishing houses, are approved for publishing. You'll have to work hard, plan and commit to the writing process to ensure that your manuscript is one of those that makes the grade.

Best wishes on your journey. If you do it right, great things are possible.

You are a new graduate; Now what?

My graduation this past week, (23 / 04 / 2012) was indeed a proud moment.  Years of hard work, commitment and sacrifices finally paid off.  For as long as I can remember, I was a self-made entrepreneur.  It is indeed a blessing to be able to take a life experience and create something of it; something that contributes to the greater good of humanity, something that can assist with paying the bills.

Here, my programmes come to mind:
  • How to improve Self-esteem & Assertiveness
  • The Art Of Letting Go of emotional pain / prolonged anger
  • Grow your business by getting great publicity (expert positioning),
to name a few.

As I sat there, listening to the words of the Vice chancellor, congratulating the new graduates with the accomplishment, encouraging us to contribute to our communities, I felt somewhat sad.

Why?

I felt sad because I realised that most new graduates, even though they would prefer to do this and contribute, do not necessarily know where to start.  Most graduates think that getting their degree is a guarantee that they will find employment.

Why aren't they taught what to do, should this not be the case?

Just recently, television news reported on the huge number of Social workers who recently completed their studies, but are struggling to find employment.

How do they contribute when they do not have money to put the basics on the table?

Another question that came to mind, was:

Why do we not teach students the necessary life skills that will equip them with skills to re-invent themselves?

The advantage of such skills, will equip them with the ability to successfully overcome challenges that they may be presented with at a later stage.  Life is tough, and there is a lot of competition out there.  Those who will make it, are the ones with this wonderful ability.

I am lucky, because I learnt all these things AND THEN enrolled to study.

One of my Psychology professors once said to me: "Andeline, you have such an amazing ability to create and teach, as a result of your life experiences."

I decided to work at getting an official qualification to create more credibility for what I know and do.

Something should be done about our graduate dilemma.  I see far too many new graduates who struggle to find employment and do not know how to make it happen for themselves.

Tertiary institutions should invest in such programmes.

Most new graduates have no financial education and it saddened me to see how many of them completed credit card application forms that they were instructed to complete.  Most of these young graduates are now starting off on a financially irresponsible note.  Perhaps tertiary institutions and financial institutions should make an effort to properly educate such young graduates.

If they were taught about re-inventing themselves, about the harsh realities out there, and about more responsible financial behaviour, they would know better than to accept every credit card offer, thinking that they have money in the bank.

A snippet on re-inventing yourself or your business

The need to re-invent oneself and / or one's business, is one that nobody can ignore these days. People's circumstances, relationships and world economic climates are constantly changing. We have to reinvent ourselves and our businesses to keep up with these changes that often feel like a rug has been pulled out from under our feet.
We are living in a competitive society, where only those who stand out, are the best, or engages in successful re-inventing strategies, will succeed. It is foolish for anyone to only depend on job security these days. Most people realise the need for re-invention. Some enrol to study further, others follow their passion and become self-employed and others discover and develop their niche.

As a small-town girl, I arrived in Gauteng a few years ago; dead afraid of the big city. I asked myself: “How do I, who at first glance, appear to not have that natural stand-out ability, get noticed for what I do?”

The answer came from one of my passions: Self-esteem. I ensured that I wore my Self-esteem Police-outfit to networking functions. People were curious about what I did and asked questions.  Exactly what I wanted. The media too became interested and ever since, I mastered the art of re-inventing myself. When I look at some of the wonderful accolades that came my way, I often have to pinch myself, because my journey is a true miracle – one combined with hard work, determination, getting up after every fall, stubborn faith and self-belief.

My journey was tough, but yours doesn't have to be.

How you could re-invent yourself or your business
The first step is to recognise when it is time to make the change. Often this step requires taking a leap of faith. The pleasure vs pain principle is often a huge motivating factor. Be informed. This way one could ensure one gains the knowledge and skills to ensure one is not left behind. Look around you. What are the trends?, What are other people or industry leaders doing? What could you do? How could you improve yourself or your product?

The importance of asking the right questions
Whoever you are, one thing is certain for all of us. We will experience emotional pain, disappointment, loss, become irritated or get angry. These are not nice at all, but there is great value in learning the lessons behind all of these.

You could do this by asking the right questions:

  • What else could this mean?
  • What am I supposed to learn from this?
  • How can I grow, as a result of what happened?
  • What can I teach, as a result of the experience?
  • How can I use it to improve my personal or professional life?
When re-inventing oneself or one's business, consider the following:
  • Planning.
  • Passion and a Positive attitude.
  • People and their Purpose.
  • Persistence.
  • PR Power.
  • Power of Networking.
  • Possible power of Collaboration.

Planning
It is important to know exactly what it is that one wishes to change or accomplish. Jot down possible strategies on how to turn your desire into reality. Should you not have all the answers, you could speak to someone who already walked the distance. Do not loose faith when one strategy doesn't work. Evaluate why it did not work, learn from it and do better next time.

Passion and a Positive attitude
In order to re-invent oneself or one's business, it goes without saying that one has to be passionate about the dream one wishes to accomplish. On tough days, you could remain positive by visualising your ideal circumstances. Cut pictures about your ideal life and circumstances from magazines, and create a collage. This could be a wonderful motivating tool.

People and their Purpose
We all need people in our lives. These people are either loved ones, clients, business associates of business prospects. It is important to recognise the role of each individual in the various categories of our lives.  Let go of those relationships that drain you and where the only thing that keeps it alive is your hope that they eventually might support you.  Hope is a good thing, but here I do not recommend it.  Do not waste time hoping. You could use that energy to get closer to your dream by focusing on the right people.

Persistence
Whether one quits a job to become self-employed or whether one would like to make changes in one's personal life, there will be challenges. It is important to have someone or something to inspire us to keep going, and to stay focused on those days when you feel like quitting. Starting one's own business often means working long hours, without a salary or days off. If you believe in your dream, are prepared to invest the hours and persist, in spite of challenges, success will be inevitable.

PR Power
Perhaps you could re-invent yourself in such a way that the media would become interested in featuring you or your great idea. This could also assist with getting you to where you want to be much sooner. Do not blend in. Stand out.

Power of networking
Networking should be less about business card grabbing, and more about making a connection with fewer, but more valuable contacts. How about wearing an interesting outfit, representing what you do, to the next networking function? Chances are, everybody would notice and be interested in who you are and what you do. Be creative and dare to be different. The downside of networking is that people often waste too much time recruiting individuals who do not like them. The art of deciphering non-verbal communication provides a wonderful time-saving tool. Make it your business to study body language. This could help you identify that a certain look, perhaps means: “buzz off.”

Possible power of collaboration
It is important to know whether it may be a great idea to collaborate or whether you should do your own thing.  Whether your re-invention is on a personal level or in business, consider a possible collaboration. Working with someone else (the right person) could serve as wonderful motivation, because it often inspires greater creativity.

Trust, respect and commitment are extremely important, more so when making the decision to work with others on a certain project.  It does not make sense to work with people when you do not trust or respect them.

Do not ignore that little voice inside.  When something does not feel right, it usually isn't.

Trust your intuition. You were born with it for a very good reason.

Wishing you a great career and bright future.
